How Seneca’s Joy Fund helped one family find stability when they needed it most

The Seneca team is always searching for ways to help young people succeed in school. But sometimes, the answer is something outside the classroom, and much simpler… like groceries.

For many families, not knowing where their next meal will come from is a daily reality. Hunger, housing instability, transportation barriers, and financial stress all shape a child’s ability to be present in the classroom. That’s why our work has always extended beyond the school walls, and one way we do it is through Seneca’s Joy Fund.

Looking Beyond the Classroom

Seneca’s Joy Fund provides flexible, direct assistance to youth and families when unexpected financial challenges threaten stability at home. While you may have seen us promote this campaign during the holidays, its impact extends far beyond the giving season. Throughout the year, the Joy Fund allows staff to respond quickly to urgent needs by providing grocery gift cards, transportation assistance, and other essential resources tailored to each family’s unique circumstances. A recent story from our Bridges Nonpublic School illustrates just how meaningful this support can be.

Before enrolling at Bridges, this student had been absent from school for nearly an entire year. However, things started to change after he joined the program. With individualized support, a nurturing school environment, and strong relationships with staff, the student began attending school regularly.

But then, something shifted.

His one-on-one support staff once again noticed a decline in his attendance and participation. Rather than assuming the challenges were happening in the classroom, our staff reached out to his mother to better understand what may be going on at home. Turns out the answer had nothing to do with school at all.

His mother explained that she was working fulltime while navigating life as a single parent, and rising food and gas prices had slowly pushed the family into crisis. Despite working every day, she found herself having to make impossible decisions — choosing between paying rent, buying groceries, or putting gas in her car so she could get to work. When families are forced to make decisions like these, school attendance often becomes the least of their worries.

Meeting Immediate Needs

By utilizing Seneca’s Joy Fund, our team was able to provide the family with a $300 gift card to help purchase groceries and other household items. This offered immediate relief during an incredibly difficult time and reminded the family they didn’t have to navigate this crisis alone. After receiving the gift card, the student’s mother shared:

“I want to thank you deeply for all the help my son has received thanks to you, the teachers, and the staff. Thank you for the Walmart gift card you helped us obtain and thank you for continuing to support my son.”

Support for the family didn’t stop there. Staff also connected the family with their district’s Family Engagement Coordinator, who introduced them to a local food pantry so they could continue receiving assistance beyond the initial gift. Perhaps the most remarkable part of this story came just one week later, when the student’s attendance returned to normal.

Now, this isn’t to say a gift card solved every challenge this family was facing. But it did remove one major barrier at exactly the right time. It helped create enough stability for this student to return to the classroom and continue building on the incredible progress he had already made. Stories like this are exactly why the Joy Fund exists.

It’s easy to think of mental health support as something that happens only in a therapist’s office. But at Seneca, we know that meeting a family’s basic needs is often one of the most meaningful mental health interventions we can provide. When caregivers aren’t forced to choose between food and rent, children are better able to build the stability they need to be successful. Because sometimes, the path back to school doesn’t begin with a lesson plan. It begins with knowing there will be food on the table when you get home.
